Aldo’s Pizza Pie brings New York Style Pizzeria to Memphis

Aldo Dean had a clear vision when he opened the first pizza restaurant in Downtown Memphis six years ago: Open a New York style pizzeria with an open kitchen.

There was only one problem: He did not know one thing about making pizza.

“I pitched my idea to investors and they said, alright how do we go about it?” recalls Dean, affectionately called Aldo by most people in Memphis. “I don’t know, but we are going to learn how to make pizza.”

Spaghetti, family and everything that makes it tradition

I always thought that spaghetti, basically spaghetti sauce on any kind of pasta, was an Italian dish that trickled down to the French Canadian, Quebecois, culture due to immigration in the 19th century.

Poorer families in Quebec used pasta as a bed for anything. They threw in a large pot the fresh produces and meat they had at the time, added some seasoning, most likely salt and pepper, and let it simmer on the stove.

Country Gardens Nursery has the largest selection of pumpkins in the Memphis area

The family business relies on loyal customers instead of heavy advertising campaigns.

“We’re a neat little secret place to come to,” McDaniel said. “We have a lot of wow factors.”

Best Memphis Burger Fest: New format, same basics ingredients

Over 2,000 people walked down the Liberty Bowl’s Tiger Lane, to eat the best of the best burgers in the city.

But this year, visitor did not cast a vote for the best burger because the event on Oct. 27 did not incorporate a competition format as in previous festivals.

Spices, goodness, and cornhole: a perfect fall afternoon

After a couple of trips down Carolina Street, I finally located the restaurant. The strong aroma drifting from the smokehouse made me wonder why I did not scroll my windows down and let my nose direct me instead of Google Maps.

Behind the large silos is an outdoor playground. This is my favorite part of Carolina Watershed. The picnic tables and cornhole boards remind me of a backyard cookout. The owner, Mac Hopper, said a lot of work was performed in order to create this large natural dinning room. Despite Memphis’ warm and steamy weather in the summer, tall trees offer shade and waterfalls to cool the air.
